Bass drums are generally produced from a single bit of tree trunk, usually mango or cedar, which can be hollowed out by both lathe or hand. More mature, larger sized drums have been made of the dense but mild fat cottonwood tree which isn't found today. Some bass drum shells are made of maple ply-wood, Other folks have a barrel stave construction.
